As Kenyans struggle to make ends meet, Charles Kimani, a graduate from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, was struggling to venture into something that could not only keep him busy, but sustain him as he kept knocking on employment doors.
The Business Information Technology graduate has for years yearned to venture in the manufacturing industry.
But being a student, he did not have money to start off. His quest to borrow money from his parents did not bear fruit since his father was equally struggling to survive.
Just when he was about to throw in the towel, an idea crossed his mind. He borrowed Sh.1,600 from M-Shwari, a mobile banking system owned by Safaricom and started a khaki bag production business that now earns him Sh.75,000 a month.
He does not have employees yet because the work can be managed by one person.
However, he works overtime when he received large orders.
The entrepreneur produces envelopes, shopping bags and book covers from roller cost papers.
His khaki bags come in different sizes. Size two goes for Sh.320 per bunch of 100 pieces. A bunch of size one goes for Sh.280 which also has 100 pieces.
“I open the business at 8.am and close at 6.pm. However, my closing time varies depending on the number of orders,” said Kimani.
An A8 and A4 envelope is sold at one shilling and seven shillings respectively. His shopping bags also vary with size. An A4 exercise book cover is sold at Sh.10 per piece.
On a good day he produces 800 bunches of bags which he transports to clients throughout the country.
“I get most of my clients on online platforms. After placing an order, they make payments via M-Pesa and an additional delivery fee. Their packages are then transport to their destinations by public transport,” said Kimani.
He makes profit of about Sh.75,000 per month.
