MAKE MONEY WITH WASTE PLASTIC IN KENYA

*MAKING MONEY WITH WASTE PLASTIC* As the country forges towards doing away with plastic pollution, Francis Muriithi is steps ahead in the plastic recycling business. Starting off as a hawker in Karatina town Nyeri County 12 years ago, Mr Muriithi has turned collecting trash into a fortune. “We came together as a team to clean up the town by collecting garbage for a little fee but did not live up the task as some members left,” said Mr Muriithi. Once his teammates left, Mr Muriithi started collecting garbage with zeal including scrap metals. “I used to deliver scrap metals to dealers within town but I realized that there were lots of plastic bottles in the trash. I seized the opportunity and created my own path of success,” he said. Mr Muriithi, an employer of four people, is currently the sole plastic collector in Karatina town. He buys a kilogramme of the waste at Sh.10 and sells them in Nairobi. “After the initial stockpile I thought if there was a market for scrap metal there must b...

HOW I MAKE SH.10,000 DAILY FROM GREEN HOUSE, DAIRY AND CHICKEN FARMING IN KENYA

*HOW I MAKE SH.10,000 DAILY FROM GREEN HOUSE, DAIRY AND CHICKEN FARMING* My name is Susan Chesyna. I became a farmer 10 years ago after I relocated from Baringo to Nakuru County and settled at Kiamunyi, in Rongai. When I arrived in the county, where I had earlier bought land, I could not stop marvelling at its beauty. The land was fertile and the crops were growing well unlike in Baringo, where erratic rains and drought were regular. I began with planting maize on about five acres of my 10-acre farm. Seven months later, I harvested 30 bags. I was happy then, but I later realized I had incurred a huge loss. After deducting cost of seeds, labor and fertilizer, I realized I had made about Sh.80,000, yet I had spent over Sh.100,000. I did not despair. In fact, I thank the loss because it opened my eyes. It made me realize that I should not depend on maize alone. So the next year, I decided to diversify into tomato farming. I took a Sh.100,000 loan from a bank in Nakuru, built a greenhouse ...

CLOSELY WATCH CHANGES AND TRENDS IN YOUR ENVIRONMENT – CHANGE AND OPPORTUNITY ARE BLOOD BROTHERS!

*CLOSELY WATCH CHANGES AND TRENDS IN YOUR ENVIRONMENT – CHANGE AND OPPORTUNITY ARE BLOOD BROTHERS!* Most people don’t like change. Fortunately, there’s nothing we can do about it. Change is a constant player in human life.  While we may hate, fight and try to avoid it, change will always happen. And only smart entrepreneurs who have learnt to be friends with change and are ready to exploit it, are always handsomely rewarded. Especially in rapidly growing economies like Africa, the tastes and needs of the market are constantly changing. Entrepreneurs must learn to watch out for trends and changes in their environments that could lead to new business ideas. The nature of the trend, good or bad, is not very relevant. There’s always an opportunity to make money during both good and bad times. When people are excited, they buy. When they are afraid, they buy. When we panic, we buy. During the recent outbreak of the CoronaVirus pandemic, a palpable panic gripped a lot of countries in the...
